How to Choose the Right Air Conditioner

If it has been a while since you last purchased an AC Unit, you’ll be pleased to find that newer models are far more energy-efficient and cost-effective to operate.

Many assume that “upsizing” is better, but that’s not true when it comes to HVAC Systems. Choosing the correct unit is critical for efficiency and cost savings. Mini Split Ductless Air Conditioner

Types of Air Conditioning Systems

When looking for the best AC unit sale in Shreveport, here are some of the types of AC Units that you may consider:

  • Central Air Conditioning System
  • Central air conditioning is the most popular type of cooling system. Central air conditioner systems pull air from inside the building and compress it with freon in the condensing unit outside. The condenser coils turn the remaining gas into a hot liquid. The liquid then moves to the evaporator coils on the furnace unit indoors and evaporates into a cooled gas. The HVAC system’s ductwork and fans push the air throughout the building.

  • Mini-Split Air Conditioning System
  • Mini-split air conditioners may be the best option if your home does not have pre existing ductwork. A mini-split unit allows you to control the temperature in different zones within your home or business. These ductless air systems also use less electricity and only need a single power supply connection.

  • Dual Fuel Air Conditioner System
  • Dual fuel air systems also share similarities with central air conditioners. The noteworthy difference is that dual fuel units lower your energy bill expenses by using heat pump technology. These systems are ideal for those living in colder parts of the country.

Buying a New Heat Pump Could Save You Thousands in AC Replacement Tax Credits

Buying a New Heat Pump Could Save You Thousands in AC Replacement Tax Credits

If you’re planning home improvements that will boost the energy efficiency of your house, the Inflation Reduction Act could save you money on your projects. Thanks to Uncle Sam, the Act, which aims to curb inflation, includes extended and expanded tax credits for energy-efficient home improvements, giving ordinary Americans incentives to go green — and save money in the process.

While there are several tax credits and rebates designed to lower carbon emissions in the home, the renewed Energy Efficient Home Improvement Tax Credit (25C) may be the most relevant. This updated version of the Nonbusiness Energy Property Credit greatly increases the tax credit limit for installing specific high-efficiency equipment, such as heat pumps, central air conditioning systems, and furnaces through the end of 2032. This means homeowners can get a tax break on energy-efficient HVAC upgrades, while helping to contribute to a cleaner environment.

What is the Inflation Reduction Act?

The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) is designed to limit inflation by reducing the deficit and addressing some of the most significant issues the United States is facing. The bill includes clean energy tax credits and other relevant tax incentives that homeowners can benefit from when they make green upgrades. As HVAC Contractors, we are most focused on the tax credits for energy efficient ACs, Heat Pumps and Furnaces.

How does the IRA and its rebates and tax credits open doors for homeowners?

One of the bill’s primary objectives is to address climate change and ultimately to slow down global warming. Focusing largely on encouraging businesses to become more eco-friendly and start taking clean energy production seriously, there are benefits for individual Americans in the bill as well. The IRA can help homeowners reduce their tax bill through rebates and tax credits for energy-efficient windows, doors, water heaters, furnaces, and heating and cooling systems.

Energy Efficient Home Improvement Tax Credit (25C)

One of the most important aspects of the IRA for homeowners is the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Tax Credit. Previously known as the Nonbusiness Energy Property Credit, this tax credit is new and improved through the IRA and provides opportunities to save on your energy-efficient upgrades.

Starting in 2023, the tax credit will be equal to 30 percent of the cost for all eligible home improvements made from January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2032. The 25C credit has an annual cap of $1,200 (including up to $600 for a qualified air conditioner or gas furnace), or up to $2,000 with a qualified heat pump, heat pump water heater, or boiler.

Additionally, there are no income requirements for this tax credit and starting in 2023, 25C is no longer a ‘one time’ credit, but an annual one.

What if homeowners had eligible equipment installed in 2022?

Homeowners who had eligible HVAC equipment installed on or after January 1, 2022, may be eligible for retroactive tax credits under this program. The 2022 tax credit is not as robust, but will credit 10 percent of the costs of installing qualified equipment and 100 percent of the costs associated with installing qualified water heaters, heat pumps, central air conditioning systems, furnaces, hot water boilers and air circulating fans.

With this tax credit, there is a lifetime limit of $500 or $300 for certain water heaters, heat pumps, and air conditioning systems for systems purchased in 2022.

How does the Home Improvement Tax Credit (25C) help the environment?

The Home Improvement Tax Credit (25C) is designed to accelerate the adoption of all-electric HVAC equipment as well as lower utility bills for homeowners. This all-electric switch means replacing equipment powered by fossil fuels with equipment that relies on electricity as its source of energy.

Electric HVAC equipment upgrades can also cut down on fossil fuel usage, if not totally eliminate it, with a hybrid system. This ‘cleaner’ electricity trend has the potential to significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions and mitigate the devastating impacts of climate change by reducing energy usage with products like a heat pump — which can also help reduce operating and maintenance costs for homeowners. The Home Improvement Tax Credit (25C) rewards homeowners for switching to these environmentally-friendly HVAC options.

Air Care Can Help You to Take Advantage of AC Replacement Tax Credits

With the latest tax credits and rebates unlocking savings for homeowners, now is the time to upgrade your HVAC System. Air Care offers several HVAC Systems that qualify for the 25C tax credit.

For more information on cost and energy savings, including how to take advantage of the latest rebates, schedule a visit with one of our technicians to discuss your system needs, rebates, and offers. We are HVAC not TAX experts, so you must contact a tax professional to confirm financial details of your personal tax eligibility for AC Replacement tax credits.

DOE Increases Minimum Efficiency for New HVAC Installations in Shreveport, Bossier City

DOE Increases Minimum Efficiency for New HVAC Installations in Shreveport, Bossier City

Effective January 1, 2023, the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) minimum energy efficiency requirements went into effect for all newly manufactured residential and commercial air conditioners and heat pumps. Simply put, HVAC Equipment Manufacturers are no longer allowed to provide HVAC Systems that perform below a certain level of efficiency. In addition to the new efficiency standards, the standards have been raised for measuring the efficiency of HVAC Systems.

Southeastern Regional Guidelines for Central Air Conditioners and Light Commercial Heating and Cooling Equipment

The DOE Divides the US into 3 Regions, and Shreveport – Bossier City falls within the Southeast Regional Guidelines. The Southeast Guidelines for Residential Split Systems less than 45,000 BTU, the minimum is 14.3 SEER2. For Residential Split Systems greater than or equal to 45,000 BTU, the minimum is 13.8 SEER2. Heat Pump Systems, the minimum is 14.3 SEER2 and 7.5 HSPSF2. For example, if a residential home needed a 2.5 ton Split AC System, we would be required to provide our customer a 14.3 SEER2 system or better. If the residence required 4 ton Split AC System, we would be required to provide our customer a 13.8 SEER2 system or better.

SEER2 vs SEER & HVAC Energy Efficiency Ratings

Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating (SEER) compares the performance of AC Systems. The DOE has also changed the measurement standards of SEER Ratings. The goal of new SEER2 testing procedures is to better represent external conditions seen in the field. Current SEER testing does not accurately emulate the influence of ductwork and external static pressure on HVAC products. Because of this, it is not often representative of real-world applications.

Heat pumps are more energy efficient than other heating systems like furnaces. Under ideal conditions, a heat pump can transfer 300% more energy than it consumes, while a high-efficiency gas furnace is about 95% efficient. And, since heat pumps perform both heating and cooling functions, they can be a great investment for homeowners. Since heat pumps can do double duty, they have both an HSPF2 and a SEER2 rating.

When a heat pump is set to “heat,” it transfers heat into your home to warm it. HSPF2 measures the efficiency of this process. When a heat pump is set to “cool,” it extracts heat out of your home to cool it down. SEER2 measures the efficiency of this process. While both HSPF2 and SEER2 are indicators of overall heat pump efficiency, they measure opposite things. The HSPF2 rating measures energy efficiency during heating months in the fall and winter, and SEER2 measures energy efficiency during cooling months in the spring and summer.

Should I Replace My AC & Heater At The Same Time?

Should I Replace My AC & Heater At The Same Time?

[lwp_divi_breadcrumbs _builder_version="4.27.2" _module_preset="default" global_colors_info="{}"][/lwp_divi_breadcrumbs]
One of the questions that homeowners may have is, “Would it be better to replace the full system?”. It makes sense to ask, why would you want to replace a component that still works? Replacing your furnace and AC at the same time, can be a cost-saving advantage to you. A Split HVAC system keeps your home nice and warm in the winter and cool in the summer. When the time comes to replace an old, worn out AC System, there are usually several options available. However, if one of the system’s major components stops working, the easy choice is to simply replace the part that’s broken. But replacing the full system, both your heating and cooling systems—even if one is still working—can save energy and money over the long term. Keep reading to learn about the advantages and disadvantages of replacing a furnace and AC together. HVAC Basics First, you should understand that Split HVAC Systems consist of several basic components, Condenser (outside unit), Air Handler (inside unit, evaporator coil & blower), Gas Furnace or Heat Kit, Ducts, Thermostat. Lifespan of Furnaces vs Air Conditioner – The average lifespan of a central air conditioner is about 15-20 years while the average lifespan of a furnace is about 15-30 years. In general, furnaces last longer than air conditioners — sometimes over twice as long. Furnaces are less prone to corrosion & mechanical wear and tear.

Reasons to Replace both Furnace and AC at the Same Time

  • Furnace is over 15 years old
  • New System is a high-efficiency system
  • Installation is complicated by space or accessibility
  • Personal preference to have a totally new system
Energy Efficient Heating & Cooling
Modern high efficiency HVAC Systems are engineered to use much less energy than systems built just 10 to 15 years ago. The efficiency of HVAC Systems can be compared by SEER Rating. The higher the SEER Rating, the more energy savings you can expect. AFUE Furnace Efficiency Rating is a measure of seasonal performance for Gas Furnaces. In general, an AFUE of 90% or higher is recommended for a new, efficient furnace system.
Furnace and AC Performance
Having a Matched System for High Efficiency Modern HVAC Systems are engineered to obtain a specific efficiency (SEER Rating). Often, the SEER Rating can only be achieved if the systems components are “matched”. In this situation, replacing the old system makes sense, because you’ll want the advantage of the energy savings & comfort level. While it is usually necessary to replace both air conditioning components at the same time (in a split system), it’s not always necessary to replace both AC components and the furnace. It’s possible to mix and match the systems, it’s not recommended, especially if the furnace is over 15 years old. It makes sense to wait to replace your furnace if it is less than 10 years old. In this case, the furnace will likely last until the next time the AC needs to be replaced. Mixing and matching a new HVAC Component with an old, inefficient component could potentially decrease the lifespan of the replacement component that you need. By replacing just one part of your overall HVAC system, you effectively lower the performance of both components. Your HVAC System won’t reach the full potential that is possible. Also, be certain that you read and understand the manufacturers warranty. Many manufacturers will not honor the warranty in cases of system mismatches.
Matched HVAC Systems Complement Each Other
A furnace system and central air conditioning system share the same air handler. When an HVAC Contractor matches a condenser with an efficient handler that will allow both systems to operate properly, increasing energy cost savings, system lifespan and increasing heating & cooling comfort.
Saving Money on Home Heating and Cooling Costs
As we said before, modern HVAC systems are designed for increased efficiency. You will absolutely save money on your monthly energy bills if your new HVAC System is properly matched. The reason for the savings is because all components work together for maximum efficiency over time. New HVAC Systems require fewer repairs, and if a repair is needed, then parts will often be covered by the manufacturers warranty.
Reasons You Shouldn’t Replace a Furnace and AC at the Same Time
It’s not always the smartest choice to replace an entire HVAC System & there are situations where it’s a disadvantage. Your HVAC System is Less Than 5 Years Old If your HVAC System is only a few years old and nothing seems to be wrong with them, then there’s no reason to replace anything. However, if repair costs become significant, then it makes no sense to keep paying for repair of a failing component. Limited Budget If a full replacement isn’t in your home repair budget, then it doesn’t make sense to force yourself into a sticky financial situation.

HVAC System add value to your home?

You can improve the overall value of your home by maintaining high-quality, compatible systems for heating and cooling. For maximum efficiency and cost savings, replacing the furnace and air conditioner at the same time, when possible, gives you reliable comfort and modern convenience. Adding a new HVAC System can increase the value of your home, and help to make the home more attractive to potential buyers.
